From Prizer Arts & Letters:
“The exhibition, “Wilhelmina Weber Furlong: A Life of Painting, Persistence & Resistance,” features the work of Wilhelmina Weber Furlong (1878–1962), a German-American artist and teacher who has been called the first woman modernist painter. At the turn of the twentieth century’s American modernist movement, Furlong was a forerunner of modern impressionistic and modern expressionistic still life painting.
Furlong’s work has long been overlooked. Like many women, Furlong struggled to be taken seriously as an artist, both because of her gender and because of resistance to the modernist movement. She persisted, though, stating that, “To live is to paint.”
Thanks to the efforts of her great grand-nephew, Clint Weber, Furlong’s paintings are becoming visible again as he takes them to galleries around the country and abroad. Prizer Arts & Letters is honored to host this exhibit in Austin. “Wilhelmina Weber Furlong: A Life of Painting, Persistence & Resistance” is a testament to Furlong’s remarkable life and talent – we invite you to come see her groundbreaking work.”
