From About Hyde Park Bar & Grill Galleries:
“An exhibition of work by native New Yorker and Austin based artist, Richard Rutner, will present an artistic journey that captures natural and cultural influences he has encountered in his global travels.
As a student in Rome, Rutner discovered the art of the Surrealists and adopted their techniques to produce a substantial vocabulary of forms of every size and shape. Works from Rutner’s graphic Gizmo Convention Series use colorful and often humorous forms placed within architecturally inspired landscapes or surreal rooms to deliver the strong graphic quality and sculptural feel that is always recognizable in Rutner’s work.
In Rutner’s Leaf Series, his attention on Puerto Rico’s tropical forms created drawings that seem to float on the page while calling on the variations of green found in the rain forest.
Absorbing the art of Japanese woodcuts, calligraphy and ancient architectures during his travels through Asia, Rutner has pushed the flat plane in traditional Asian landscapes to create depth and layers of imagery in his own etchings and lithographs.
Trips to New Mexico, Colorado and the interior of Mexico provided inspiration for surreal landscape pastels and an extensive series of drawings and metal wall-relief paintings based on Mesoamerican Indian masks.
Hebraic Fragments, Rutner’s most recent body of work, is a series of pen and ink drawings and digital prints inspired by the Aleppo Codex, the earliest know text of the Hebrew Bible. Rutner explores the manipulation of Hebrew letters in numerous abstract combinations. By adding organic forms extracted from his previous plant studies, Rutner brings another layer of ideas to stimulate the viewer’s imagination.
