From Plush Gallery:
“Norman Kary has lived and worked in Dallas since 1976, moving to the area after completing his Bachelor of Science degree at Virginia Commonwealth University. In 1982 he was one of the supporters behind the founding of D-Art, the seminal non-profit which later became the Dallas Contemporary. He served on their board from 1985-87. Norman showed with Edith Baker Gallery and then Craighead Green Gallery, before being represented by Plush three years ago. His works are in numerous public and private collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Austin Museum of Art, Old Jail Art Center, and Dallas Museum of Art. His two person show “Traces,” with Marilyn Jolly, was recently featured at Arts Fort Worth, and will move to Untitled Gallery in Oklahoma City this July.
The artist began this new body of work last year, after finding a book on magic which reignited memories of being a magician as a teenager. Norman’s uncle was a professional magician, who encouraged him to perform for the neighborhood kids. His current body of work mixes drawn and erased images on chalkboard surfaces with both collage and found objects, “attempting to capture the mystery of a ‘now you see it, now you don’t’ effect.””
