From Assemblage Contemporary Craftsman:
“While studying graphic design, Cyrus Walker became fascinated by the influence mass-produced print products had on forming the identity of the West. Simultaneously, Walker was exposed to vintage documents and publications while working at an antique store…setting him on a path to study this widely distributed work. This path led to “Boy Howdy!”
“Boy Howdy!”: Wild Works of the Imagined West features bold, pulp western style carefully balanced with themes of modern mythology/pop culture . Cyrus Walker’s work captures, reflects and manipulates the mass-produced dime novels and comic books that influenced the themes of the “Imagined West” through the interplay of preservation and exaggeration. Walker re-introduces these familiar narratives with the addition of vignettes from other prominent genres of storytelling, resulting in new tall tales that are rooted in timeless themes of human nature.
Cyrus Walker’s “Boy Howdy!” is playful and witty with a lot of “Giddy Up!” and a little bit of “Whoah Nelly!”
Cyrus Walkers creations are not simply reissued versions of classical western style, instead, his use of classic ideas and commercial style broadcast a vibrant, updated “Imagined West”.”
