April 4 - May 2, 2022
From Contracommon:
“Contracommon is proud to present DE LA TIERRA, an exhibition of works by Gabi Magaly and Chris Marin, running from April 4 to May 2, 2022. A reception will be held at Contracommon on Saturday, April 16 from 6-9pm, and is free and open to the public.
“As brown-skinned kids, we were filled with self-deprivation. The imagery of the work is based on our two different Mexican-American upbringings. The materials show how we grew up by creating portraits of our Brown selves. We draw from our experiences because we want these items to be culturally and visibly accessible. From one side, Gabi utilizes fabrics to connect with her femininity and pay homage to her abuelitas. On the other side, Chris uses fabrics in reference to fashion, as a male, and to show up, show off, and take up space. We’re still learning how to be gentle towards our bodies but looking back on it, we can now say that we love our sun kissed skin.”
Gabi Magaly received her BFA in photography at Sam Houston State University in 2015 and received her MFA in Visual Arts at the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2020. She works predominantly in the medium of photography, but also employs other mediums like sculptural installation and embroidery. Magaly currently lives in San Antonio, Texas and works remotely at Diné College in Tsaile, Arizona. She also was recently awarded two CAMMIE awards from Blue Star Contemporary and Luminaria Contemporary Cultural Center during Contemporary Art Month 2020.
Chris Marin received his BFA in Painting + Drawing at Texas Tech University in 2016 and received his MFA in Fine Arts at California College of the Arts in San Francisco, California in 2018. His work is founded in the 2D depiction of the figure while predominantly existing in the soft-sculptural painting world. Marin lives in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and works as a Professor of Practice at Louisiana State University. He has two upcoming solo exhibitions as John F. Lott Gallery, Lubbock, TX and the Rosemary Duffy Larson Gallery, Davie, FL.
DE LA TIERRA will be on view in the Contracommon Gallery from April 4 – May 2. The Gallery is open to the public from 12-6 pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with private viewing appointments available Monday – Thursday at calendly.com/contracommon.
