From All the Sudden:
“All the Sudden presents a two-day ceramic pit fire led by Partial Shade. On Saturday February 12th, Join us while we build the fire; featuring a baked potato dinner. On Sunday, February 13th, join us for an exhibit and reception featuring ceramic objects fired the day before, as well as a companion publication by Henry Smith and seasonal brews by Jay Roff-Garcia.
A parallel to Partial Shade’s larger curatorial practice, the objects on view all embody the unpredictability and chance inherent to working in an outdoor space. Fire dictates the works’ color and texture; vapors from burning sawdust, manure, copper, newsprint and compost enter the open pores of the objects, resulting in a work shaped by context and environment.
Partial Shade and All the Sudden invite you to join us for a two day ceramic pit fire event. On February 12th, participating artists will layer bisque-fired ceramics and various colorants in a large hole dug into the ground and light the entire thing on fire, triggering an atmospheric process. At 4pm on Saturday, the firing stage will be opened to the public, and there will be a dinner of baked potatoes cooked over the fire available for purchase. The following day, on February 13, the participating artists will collectively excavate their newly-fired ceramic objects from the pit, and these objects will be installed throughout the afternoon for an exhibition in All the Sudden’s warehouse gallery space. The public is invited to attend the exhibit’s reception from 4-8pm on Sunday.
Creating a parallel to Partial Shade’s larger curatorial practice, the objects on view all embody the unpredictability and chance inherent to working in an outdoor space. The contents of the fire dictate the surface color and texture of the objects — the methods for creating different surfaces reframe domestic materiality as a series of chemical actions/reactions, compounds and sensitivities. Vapors from burning sawdust, manure, copper, newsprint, compost, etc. enter the open pores of the objects, resulting in a pattern shaped by context and environment— residual evidence of contact.”
