From Plush Gallery:
“RANDALL GARRETT / CHILANGRINGO: Four years ago, Randall Garrett established a studio in Mexico City. In that time, he has traveled back and forth from Dallas to Mexico City, organizing events here at Plush Gallery, while creating art there in his studio. For years he traveled regularly to this chaotic city of more than 21 million people, with its blend of modern and indigenous cultures spreading out across the Valle de México. In the last four years, Garrett has lived in the colonias of Cuauhtémoc, El Centro, Moderna, Postal, Narvarte, Coyoacán, Doctores, and Buenavista, experiencing a wide swath of the city. His work, based in the aesthetics of both performance and collage, has evolved in response to the materials and content of the streets, with its textures and layering of posters, graffiti, debris, and history itself. The work in “Chilangringo” foregrounds that new identity with which he is being forged, one of being both a “Chilango,” or Mexico City native, and “Gringo,” a foreigner from the United States.”
