From SMU Libraries:
“An Eye for Elegance explores the life and legacy of Carrie Marcus Neiman, a child of German Jewish immigrants, who along with her brother Herbert and her husband A.L. Neiman co-founded the iconic luxury speciality store Neiman Marcus in 1907. Carrie’s magical ability to predict future fashion trends and her unparalleled sense of style, along with her commitment to customer service helped set the standard for retail excellence that is unsurpassed.
The exhibition traces Carrie’s life from the founding of the store as a young woman, through the Texas boom years of the 1920’s, 30’s, and 40’s, to her election as Chairman of the Board in 1951, and to her unexpected death in 1953. Carrie Marcus Neiman’s life is illustrated through photographs, historical documents, personal correspondence, exquisite gowns, and other artifacts which tell the story of a woman who was ahead of her time and who is often overlooked.
The exhibit will also direct attention to other talented women from the earliest days of Neiman Marcus including buyer Moira Cullen, first fashion promotions director Kay Kerr, interior designer Eleanor LeMaire, and food director Helen Corbitt, all of whom shaped the fashions and tastes of their clients and society.”
