From Carla Hughes Fine Art:
“Jesmil M. Maldonado-Rodriguez is a contemporary illustrator, pattern designer, and printmaker. A native from Guayanilla, Puerto Rico, remembering her home and childhood has become a primary inspiration for her development as an artist.
Through her patterns, illustrations, and prints, a peculiar world is created and helped Maldonado analyze, accept, and embrace her uniqueness. Inspired by elements from her Puerto Rican culture such as insects, reading aids, food illustrations, the colors of the environment, and the recreation of classroom doodles have led her to label herself as a Creative Weirdo. She aims to transmit to her audience the following message “You shouldn’t be ashamed or hide who you are and what you like.”
Artwork: L@s Cabecidur@s is a 100 illustration series. Cabecidur@s in Puerto Rico refers to a stubborn person, and it does not matter what they are being told. They will not change their mind. There are three subseries within the series: the transformation of illustrations from Puerto Rican reading aids, the development of doodles made out of boredom and lack of interest, and insect patterns inspired by the lack of managing stress and anxiety. Each illustration expresses who I am, what I think, where I want to go, and my true nature.”
