“MATT EDDMENSON (Nashville, Tennessee)
Matt Eddmenson, who graduated from The Art Academy of Cincinnati in 1999, draws from a range of influences and sources for his practice, including Cowboy Comics, Pop Art, and the work of Cy Twombly. His works are gatherings and reconfigurations of American imagery and iconography, commonly featuring cowboys, skulls, and rodeo horses. He also incorporates images from the golden age of comics and tattoo culture. Eddmenson explains: “I work from my memories as a child, I learned to draw by tracing comic book covers over and over until I was able to draw these characters from memory—I have a deep admiration for comic book art. There is a constant battle in my work that positions itself between taking something that is well drafted/executed and then destroying it to some degree. By planting a mark or a scribble so deliberately that it then becomes the new focal point of the piece. A simple act of “messing it up” so that the work takes on a dual personality as if there are two artists working in tandem.”
TOM JEAN WEBB (Austin, Texas)
Tom Jean Webb, originally born in a town just outside of London, now based in Austin, Texas, spends much of his time traveling and being influenced by the American Southwest. Webb is interested in the role creativity and art have in society but also in an individual sense. The work he creates is inspired by the American landscape. This strongly came from his grandfather’s influence, and his fascination with his house. It was decorated with all sorts of Americana, artifacts and memorabilia. Through this relationship Webb found a love for the US and a relationship with the South West. Many of his works evoke his love for the region through his colors and subjects. Using this inspiration he creates contemporary portrayals of ancient areas and themes. The simple fact that he found such joy in a culture that existed outside of his own, and the way that he adopted this through his fashion or ideas, is something that has had a big effect on Tom and his works.
