July 17 - August 27, 2021
From Janette Kennedy Gallery:
“The Janette Kennedy Gallery presents How We Hurt Each Other, a mixed media exhibition by Nathan Porterfield that juxtaposes the concepts of comfort and disruption through the use of materials and pattern. By using screws to mimic domestic interior patterns, Porterfield sets up a kind of reckoning. In works comprised of designs inspired by textiles and tile motifs, each composition suffers some major disruption to its placid continuity. The patterns continue into these disrupted areas, but not without significant alteration. The resulting paradox creates a confrontation between domestic tranquility and an encroaching outside world, as well as a bird’s-eye view to the nuances of positive and negative human behavior. How We Hurt Each Other is an acknowledgement of the subtle and varied means of hurting, binary thinking, and a study in how we interpret comfort. “
