From Inman Gallery:
“A companion project to Jamal Cyrus’ survey exhibition at the Blaffer Art Museum, Levels and Layers: An Artist’s Reflections on Third Ward was organized by Cyrus for the University Museum at Texas Southern University. The exhibition brings together a selection of historical works from the University’s pioneering collection with vernacular and contemporary works by artists connected to Houston’s Third Ward.
Cyrus writes:
“Riverside Terrace, Sugar Hill, the Cuney Homes, and the Bottoms make up the area of Greater Third Ward, or Third Ward, TX. These places and spaces have long been acknowledged as cultural hubs within the city of Houston. The exhibition Levels & Layers: An Artist’s Reflections on Third Ward highlights the cultural contributions made to the field of the visual art. Levels…takes a historical look at the varied art making registers that have taken place within the neighborhood of Third Ward, from the proto Afro-futurist teachings of Dr. John Biggers and the TSU school, to the social practice strategies of Rick Lowe’s Project Row Houses, to the self taught visionary yard artists that once thrived in the area, and all gradations between. The art history of this neighborhood is truly remarkable, and can stake a claim to its own model of art education. Any time, any place.”
The University Museum is located in the south wing of TSU’s Fairchild Building, the oldest building on campus and filled with historic significance. Parking is available in Lot L at Blodgett and Ennis using the Blodgett visitor’s entrance. Validated parking is available for all visitors to the museum.
