From the ArtCentre of Plano:
“The popular ArtCentre of Plano’s Sculpture Garden Exhibition featuring works by Jerry Dodd, has expanded from large scale outdoor pieces to additional pieces that will be on view inside the Centre’s Saigling House home as of May 8, 2021. His works include wall hangings, collages, digital prints and freestanding sculpture pieces. The sculptures are painted steel and smaller versions of the exterior pieces in the sculpture garden. Dodd has shown his work regionally and nationally, including works now on view at the Museum of Biblical Art in Dallas.
Suzy Jones, executive director of the ArtCentre of Plano says, “The Dodd sculptures have been popular since their installation in the ArtCentre sculpture garden, and I am confident that visitors will enjoy his collages and prints just as much.”
Dodd lives and works in Commerce, TX. He received a B.S. in art from Central Michigan University, and an MFA from the University of Oregon. He has been teaching art and sculpture for nearly 40 years, the past 24 at Texas A&M at Commerce.
In describing his art, Dodd says, ‘The present exhibit, “Inside and Out,” is a mixture of my primary medium, welded steel and more recent 2-D work. The 2-D work began with collage, but I had been having archival issues due to fading and peeling paper and other materials. As it turns out, photocopy inks are more stable than the various inks and dyes in the collage materials. I have been using locally available commercial printers and the large format printers that are available at Texas A&M University-Commerce. I also store the prints digitally.
“The imagery in the prints juxtaposes ancient and modern, natural and industrial, serious and silly, fine art and popular images. These works are meant to be provocative, surprising, and somewhat mysterious.I have been welding steel for over fifty years. I am fascinated with the power of the process. The ability to permanently join two pieces of steel: the variety of forms from light and airy, to heavy and architectural, to sensuous and organic, intrigue me. Over the last several years I have been using powder coating which allows more permanent placement outdoors but must be solid color. The use of enamels allows a richer surface: different colors, shapes, layers. However, the enamels are less permanent.”
