From K Space Contemporary:
“Becky Smith has been making art since she was a child. She grew up in a family of craftspeople who worked with whatever was available and this resourcefulness translated into her making found object assemblages. Always evolving, her sculptures often combine rusty machine parts, antique frames, furniture parts, vintage doll parts and tchotchkes, small animal bones, and any manner of other curious items discovered at garage sales, second-hand stores, on the side of the road or given to her by friends. She also makes art lamps that are created more for their moods and beauty than actual lighting. Recently, she has turned to collage and enjoys composing “other worldly” stories from simple cut and paste. Thematically, her work carries ominous overtones and brooding themes imbued with dark humor.
“I’ve always been intrigued by dolls. I use them in my assemblages because all can relate to their human form. It is often a shock to the senses when I alter the dolls to make them speak beyond their innocence. I like my art to excite, amuse, inspire. It might even anger, repulse. But will always generate a response.” – Becky Smith
Stop by the gallery to see this intriguing and – some might say – “creepy” exhibition, or see it online at www.kspacecontemporary.org.”
