From Aurora Picture Show:
“Aurora presents two free-admission, outdoor screenings of short films made in the 1950s and 60s by legendary figure of independent and experimental cinema, Shirley Clarke. Clarke began as a dancer, studying under famed dancer/choreographer Martha Graham before turning to filmmaking. She became a driving force in the New American Cinema scene in New York, and a founding member of Jonas Mekas’ Film-Makers Cooperative. While she’s perhaps best known for her narrative movies (The Connection, The Cool World) and feature length documentaries (Portrait of Jason, Ornette: Made In America), this curated selection of her rarely-seen short films gives a rare glimpse at Clarke’s journey of filmic experimentation from her earliest dance films Dances in the Sun (1953) to the avant-garde classic Bridges Go-Round (1958) and a rare piece made in collaboration with her daughter Wendy, Butterfly (1967). These two outdoor screenings require advance RSVPs (very limited capacity, so act quickly!), and masks and social distancing at the event.
