From Clamp Light Studios:
“Can’t Let Go is a collection of multimedia works from artists placed together in the Artist Mother Network Seasonal Critique Group. Mentor Sarah Sudhoff and Crit Group participants, Alison Chen, Katherine Duclos, Heather Schute, Olivia Phare, and Sara Corley Martinez, all make work tangential to the parenting experience. This group exhibition is presented for the Film Theme of Contemporary Art Month in San Antonio, with performance and video pieces projected on a loop in the gallery window. These film and time based works are accompanied by both two dimensional and three dimensional pieces focusing on themes of impermanence, nostalgia, and growth through change. Made during the pandemic, in locations across North America, this work speaks to the anxiety that many have fostered during quarantine.
In 60 lbs of pressure a video performance by Sarah Sudhoff. Sarah is shifting under bricks on her chest. Her breath is something ephemeral leaving, while simultaneously her body is unable to escape the weight. Alison’s animations and photography work have micro focus on bodily actions. These relationships are broken down to small parts such as hands to show the subtle beauty in daily interactions. Many of Heather’s pieces draw from the changing political climate in the states. Newspapers heavily embroidered with thread, they show a quest for change and obsession while contemplating political issues. Olivia’s scanner series deals with things breaking apart as she makes captivating art with materials at her bedside. Katherine’s cement nipples turn breastfeeding, a stage of parenting that is so brief, into something much heavier with greater length of life. Sara’s flocking material reminds one of mold or fungus covering something to break it down back into the earth. Her work focuses on what we treasure and what we discard in all the detritus of parenting.
All the work in this exhibition speaks to “What we hold on to when we can’t let go”
