From K Space Contemporary:
“In her solo exhibition Motherbaby, Loring Baker emphasizes the specific strangeness of becoming a mother as she explores the fine line between the particular loneliness of motherhood and the new overwhelming connection a mother shares with her child. Physically the work aims to show a deep curiosity and playfulness of form through detailed and obsessive mark making, shape, line work, and pattern. These bodies are Every Mother and Every Child, experiencing Every Mother and Child things. The canvases are black and white – there is no color, there are no shades, there is no race, there are no partners – just mother and child – as one, or separate, it’s all the same. The mothers are landscapes of time, their bodies made of marks as moments and thoughts, and bits of understanding. The child is portrayed as a chrysalis, in a constant transitional state, not yet fully formed. The mother, always there to feed, bath, or nurture, lives in awe of this constant transformation and connection.
Loring Baker received her Master of Fine Arts from Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi. She has shown her work both nationally and internationally, and has been featured in New American Paintings, Studio Visit Magazine, and numerous other publications, books, and blogs. Currently Loring teaches as an adjunct faculty member in the Del Mar College Art Department. Ms. Baker currently lives and works in Corpus Christi, Texas.
