Artist Statements
Joshua Dodson – I have a strong structure based subject correlating with drafting and geometry from architecture integrated with bold shapes and correct color compositions from graffiti is very prevalent in my work. Creating juxtapositions of complementary colors to mold these structures have made them seem to have a solid stance while being playful and open. Continuing to expand on these sometimes metamorphic style archetypes is the ultimate goal for me.
Kyle Hanson – My work explores the human condition as experienced through object adaptation. Rather than painting the figure, I am interested in the human presence as felt through objects. Objects are key to the work because they are more reliable than the human figure, reflecting human sensibilities without the ability to express freewill. Consequently, by replacing the human figure with objects, we are unable to merely observe human interaction but are elicited to engage with the objects on our own in order to give these objects narrative. Objects, in their own right, reflect to us our own intentions.
I observe these objects not only for what they are, but why they are, taking interest to the purpose that was superimposed on the object’s material body by human intention. Grasping at the multiple layers of purpose and history, I am faced by my own orientation with these objects. As a fan of Marcel Duchamp’s work, I also poke fun at the object while rejoicing in the human connection. Loc Huynh – Through painting, I use materiality to describe the material world. By rooting my practice in visual culture and art history, I seek to extend the meaning of images beyond their initial form. The coalescing of opposing and complimentary formal elements accentuate the visual and contextual friction. This allows the work to exist in an ambiguous state. Seen together, my works appear disparate, but they suggest alternative meanings through association with one another. The works can exist on their own, but engage in dialogue when juxtaposed against each other. Although about specific occurrences, the works afford the viewer their own interpretations.
About The Artists
Joshua Dodson – (born 1988) is an urban contemporary artist based in Dallas,Texas. Dodson’s work is inspired by the mysterious and intriguing subculture of graffiti. Meeting other "writers” he quickly began learning the ways of the practice from being a "toy”, a newbie with no skill or style to being able to produce a fresh body of work(tags,throw-ups,burners,etc.) Over the years, Joshua studied many different interpretations of artworks including futurism, architecture, modern art, constructivism, minimalism and pure abstract expressionism, while still keeping in check the roots of his current works. He has shown at Fort Works Art, Ro2 Art, the Janette Kennedy Gallery, and was featured in D Home Magazine.
Kyle Hanson – is a painter currently based in Denton, Texas. Hanson initially studied biology at the University of North Texas to pursue an interest in environmental ecology. He began working at a industrial lab. While operating complex machinery, Hanson found himself wanting to use his creativity to solve a different set of complex problems. From carpentry, to music, and finally to painting Hanson discovered his medium, “Through the use of color and applying decisive strokes to describe infinitely anything I could imagine, I soon became obsessed.” Hanson graduated with a BFA from the University of North Texas in 2020 Loc Huynh – (b. 1992 Austin, TX) earned his BFA from Texas State University in 2016. He did some graduate work at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and received his MFA from the University of North Texas in 2020. Huynh has exhibited work at numerous venues nationally, including Baby Blue Gallery, Chicago; Wilkinson Gallery (New York Academy of Art) New York; Inpost Gallery, Albuquerque, RO2, Dallas; Terminal 136, San Antonio; among many more. Huynh is the recipient of awards, including the Voertman-Ardoin Fellowship, Hixson-Lied Fellowship, and Vermont Studio Residency Fellowship. His work has been featured in New American Paintings, Glasstire, I Like Your Work Podcast, amongst others.
