A Very Short Engagement: Fellows in Craft is an exhibition featuring recent artworks of Joan Clare Brown, Hong Hong, Nicolle LaMere, and Kirstin Willders. Although hailing from disparate regions of the country, the fellows share a common language of intensive studio practice and devotion to their individual crafts. These processes brought them together as fellows at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. Works represented in this exhibition include Joan Clare Brown’s intimate, porcelain sculptures depicting women’s resistance and resilience; Hong Hong’s monumental paper compositions considering connections between the body and landscape; Nicolle LaMere’s environmentally and biologically driven ceramic works investigating the pull of time; and Kirstin Willders’ architectural projects exploring the relationship between the sacred, the senses, and social structures.
