From Aurora Picture Show:
“Aurora Picture Show is proud to premiere a unique, new performance work by Houston-based artists and brothers Anthony and Francis Almendárez that questions how histories, cultural traditions, and personal experiences are kept and transmitted. Incorporating original and archival imagery with live readings and improvised music, Navigating The Archives Within explores distinctions between “official” narratives, marginalized histories, and subjective memories while it blends and remixes them. Filmed live at Aurora’s space and streaming free for five days on our site, this 30-minute video conveys an autoethnographic journey through Latinx misrepresentation, erasure, subordination, and subversion. In addition to the premiere of this performance video, Aurora presents a live, online discussion with Francis and Anthony Almendárez moderated by writer/curator Laura August on Friday, Dec. 5 (5pm CST).

Francis Almendárez is an interdisciplinary artist, filmmaker, and educator that traverses the intersections of history, (auto)ethnography, and the arts. Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, he currently lives and works in Houston, TX where he is a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Houston School of Art. Almendárez’ work addresses memory and trauma as it unpacks and reconstructs identity–specifically of im/migrant, queer, working-class bodies of Central America, the Caribbean, and their diasporas. He has participated in exhibitions, screenings, and performances in the US and abroad, including recent shows at the Galveston Art Center, Galveston, TX; Artpace, San Antonio, TX; The Reading Room, Dallas, TX; and National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taichung, Taiwan.
Anthony Almendárez is a Houston-based musician, composer, educator, and video artist. His musical works experiment with traditional narrative structures, as his more recent video and installation work examines the human condition through new modes of storytelling more inclusive of the histories and collective memories of marginalized cultures. Almendárez’s compositions have been performed and premiered at events and venues including Alabama Song, Houston, TX; West Fork New Music Festival, Fairmont, WV; Marshall New Music Festival, Huntington, WV; Florida School of the Arts, Palatka, FL; the Conservatoire Maurice Ravel Flute Convention, Paris, France; and at Goldsmiths, University of London, London, UK.
