PrintMatters Houston was formed in 2009 to support printmakers. PrintHouston 2011 was the first city-wide celebration of original prints throughout the Houston area. Museums, non-profit spaces, galleries, and alternative spaces joined in the celebration, presenting exhibitions, workshops, and special events open to the public. In 2017 PrintHouston became a biennial event. In conjunction with PrintHouston, the organization sponsors NEXT, a national, juried, biennial competition that includes artists from the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. They also sponsor Rockin’ Rollin’ Prints, during which a two-ton steamroller is used to print three-by-five-foot woodcuts by 50 Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana artists.
The mission of PrintMatters Houston is to promote traditional and nontraditional printmaking, encourage print collecting, and further the professional growth of members through citywide outreach, public art functions, and annual member exhibitions. The membership consists of artist members and general members, and soon to be added are student members. Artist members are established artists from the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. To become an artist member, artists apply and are juried into the organization by the PrintMatters board. PrintMatters Houston became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation in 2015.
