October 13 - January 24, 2021
A solo exhibition of large-scale works by Jon Flaming.
“Beginning October 8, the Museum of the Southwest will present Westland by renowned Texas artist Jon Flaming, showcasing a new body of work exploring cowboy culture and the rural Southwest. The collection comprises large-scale oil on canvas painting, as well as watercolor drawings – some rendered in carbon and others with the juice of the prickly pear cactus – and a series of photographs focused on West Texas landscapes. Flaming’s style represents a formal departure from the naturalistic treatment typically lauded by traditional western painters, as he depicts these time-honored subjects in a fresh, new way.
Texan artist Jon Flaming is, much like the Lone Star State itself, vast – in interests and richness, in talent and good talk. In 1985 Jon graduated from Texas State University with a bachelor’s degree in design and for the last 30 years has been creating award-winning images and branding campaigns for many clients including Neiman Marcus, The John Wayne Film Festival, Forbes, FedEx and Pepsi. His work has been recognized and published by numerous organizations including Communication Arts, Print Magazine, Graphis and The Society of Illustrators. Just recently, the John Wayne family asked Jon to partner with them on promoting the John Wayne Brand. Jon’s fine art is in the permanent collection of the Tyler Museum of Art, the Grace Museum in Abilene, and the San Angelo Museum of Fine Art. His work is also in many private and public collections and has been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows.
The exhibition will be available to the public fromOctober8,2020 to January 24, 2021. Guests can reserve a one-hour block for their household (up to 8 people) to appreciate the Museum’s galleries in an exclusive, socially distanced setting. Only one household is permitted per time slot, masks are required, and the Museum will be cleaned between each visit. Free for Museum members and $15 per household for non-members.
