“Being, an exhibit of new works by local sculptor Alejandra Almuelle. It will be on view August 1st to 22nd by appointment. Due to the pandemic there will not be an opening reception. To schedule a visit go to the link at the bottom of the page.
This series explores the state of being as a process of becoming. Open to all possible instances in the ground of experience, Being becomes happening. It unfolds through time as possibility. Unbound from fixed identifications, Being embodies the space it both inhabits and transits. Temporarily this; temporarily here.
The exploration of an idea in a piece is central to Almuelle. She works in a series until the idea is exhausted within the form. She has completed several series in which the common thread is the human shape. She usually finds herself in between the pull that lures her to work to see “it“ in front of her and the challenge to translate into form what has an intangible shape in a corner of her mind’s eye. So while working on a piece, the piece is also working on her, working as a way of revealing, making visible, bringing into light. As a base medium, she feels that clay is appropriate for expressing the human journey because it is the material we are made of.
Almuelle, originally from Peru, has established her home in Austin working as a ceramicist. Addressing the functionality of the medium as well as its sculptural expression has been equally important for her. She has participated in shows in galleries, museums and art fairs with both pottery and sculpture. Almuelle’s solo show Journey was awarded “ Best Solo Show of the Year” by the Austin Critics Table Awards. Being will be on view August 1st to 22nd.”
