June 12 - 17, 2020
The third Nasher Windows exhibition will be presented by Dallas-based artist Vince Jones and run Friday, June 12 through Wednesday, June 17.
Jones’s installation presents a secured room within a secured room. The framework walls within the Nasher vestibule define the structure of a more intimate, see-through space within the transparent confines of the entryway to the museum. One can see that the door to Jones’s room is secured by a book and a ratchet strap tethered to its back wall. The architectural construction, which Jones has titled Ghost Trap, recalls the wild contraptions common to 1950s teen adventure novels, similar to the volume bracing the door. The improvised security device derives from the artist’s overnight stay in a supposedly haunted house where the door to his room kept blowing open. The theme of vulnerability to and securing oneself against an invisible threat resonates with recent experiences under shelter-in-place directives during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ghost Trap is one of Jones’s largest sculptures to date and continues his practice of mining the potential meanings of found objects, which the artist often combines in witty and provocative ways. Working in a variety of media, his altered objects recall Dada constructions of the 1920s and 30s and often gently and humorously critique contemporary society.
Nasher Windows is a new series of exhibitions sited within the Nasher’s entrance vestibule on Flora Street. The installations are viewable through the windows from the outside of the Renzo Piano-designed museum and provide exhibition space for North Texas-based artists, while offering the public an accessible way to view art while the building is closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Presented weekly until the museum resumes operating hours, Nasher Windows installations run Friday-Wednesday and host a roster of early- and mid-career North Texas-based artists.
Subsequent artists for Nasher Windows will be announced via media alert and on the Nasher Sculpture Center’s social media channels in the coming weeks. Supplemental content can be found on the Nasher App, available for download on iOS devices, and as a web app.
