Six Years of Serpency is an expansive collection of artworks by Corpus Christi native, Leticia Ernestina Gomez. In it, she explores the duality of relationships, the attachments we have to one another and the privacy of those emotions and experiences within the digital age of loneliness.
Through this semi-autobiographical collection of 60+ color filled drawings on black paper, Gomez illuminates the commonality of interconnected narratives about intimacy, communal identity, and self-awareness. Transposing positions as both the experiencer and the witness, each drawing reflects on the complexity of our individual and shared capacity to express, communicate and embrace the emotionality and vulnerability of our current culture.
The visual and visceral aesthetics of indigenous peoples and native tribes are present in her rhythmic linework and meticulous patterns. Inspired by the Mi’kmaw concept of Two-Eyed Seeing, Gomez creates work that exhibit reverence to both indigenous worldviews and western psychologies. Within this collection of drawings, she is holding space for multiple perspectives through visual seeing, mental knowing, and instinctual being. Gomez holds a B.F.A in Drawing & Painting from the University of North Texas (2010) and is in pursuit of a M.A in Consciousness and Transformative Studies with a specialization in Dream Studies from John F. Kennedy University (2020).
