“Designer Zaneta Taylor has a deep interest in the ethical considerations of communication and the distribution of information in the digital age–in how one internalizes information and translates it into knowledge and meaning based on one’s own values and cognitive inclinations. Over the years, Taylor has privately engaged in the practice of commonplacing, creating idiosyncratic repositories to house information sourced from conversations, onscreen media, selections from readings, music, artworks, and other material. To share this information, Taylor creates lockers, curated collections for individuals to engage with topics in order to construct new meanings. Although Taylor develops a conceptual direction for each collection, the aim is not for the individual to decipher her conceptual intent; instead, the process is intended to empower individuals to use the process of interpreting information as a method to explore their own mind and predilections.
For the first time, Taylor has created a locker in the form of a publication, for the purpose of inviting the public to engage with themes inspired by the work of a diverse group of Black artists who explore topics ranging from beauty to silence. Over the course of the fall term, various student groups at Texas State were invited to manipulate Taylor’s locker, to make selections from its pages, author methods of interaction, and articulate their thoughts and interpretations. The result is a unique, limited-edition book and an exhibition showcasing the process of its creation.
