February 6 - April 19, 2020
Duran is a lens-based artist working on his degree in Studio Art with a concentration in Photography at Lamar University. Duran is active within the Department of Art and Design through the organizations he is a part of, the art honor society Kappa Pi, and treasurer of Artists Common. After graduating, Thomas plans on pursuing a graduate degree in photography. Originally from Houston, Duran credits the architecture and people he interacted with growing up in addition to his college experience for molding his creative process when shooting photos.
“I was born and raised in the suburbs of Houston,” he said. “I never started making art until I got to Lamar. I owe a lot of the way I create to the faculty they have.” Duran’s photography explores the stark contrast of light and dark with portraiture and showcases his love for architecture and the human form. “My work is based around harsh lighting,” he said. “Having a bright orange or blue light blast onto a building is just mesmerizing. I want others to see the beauty in the everyday architecture.”
