Wingload is a solo exhibition of mixed media works and installations by Philana Oliphant. In her work, Oliphant engages in complex, intricate mark-making and paper-cutting to develop a simple form—the plane, the curve. Her materials are diverse, yet they maintain common aesthetic qualities. Graphite, ink, litho crayon, steel, aluminum, and porcelain interact with Duralar, Yupo, and rag paper. These materials invite formal experimentation that juxtaposes rigidity and delicacy, bold strokes and fine detail. Limiting herself to a black and white palette, Oliphant finishes each work as a stand-alone piece before combining, cutting, layering several works into a 3-dimensional sculptural installation. The result is a gorgeous combination of media, texture and mark-making. “Formally, my work seeks simplicity and balance in the face of confusion.”
Philana Oliphant exhibits her work nationally in group and solo shows. Most recently, her work has appeared in the Texas Biennial, the Solo Show(down) at the Fort Worth Community Art Center, and the Vignette Art Fair in Dallas. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including Women in the Arts from the Women’s Foundation of East Texas, and her work is included in several permanent collections, such as the Artist Printmaker Research Collection at Texas Tech University and the Wichita Falls Museum of Art.
Oliphant teaches printmaking and figure drawing at Tyler Junior College, where she serves as gallery director and as the faculty sponsor for the Sex Traffic Awareness and Relief club. She has received the Mattie Alice Scroggin Baker Excellence in Teaching Award. She lives and works in East Texas, where she shares the forest and a studio with her husband James Pace, their poet daughter Aza Pace, and their three dogs.
