Body A is concerned with the deeply personal struggle for bodily autonomy. So often in life we do not feel we have ownership over our bodies. There is a push and pull between the sensations we experience—our intuitions, our desires—and the expectations of those outside our selves. Yet in a true and tangible way, there can be no separation between our bodies and our being, and we are the only ones who should hold sway over how we use, shape, and respond to the sensations of our bodies.
Body A reflects each photographer’s journey of discovery, highlighting the tension created when they come into conflict with pressures and expectations outside themselves. Through myriad media, from quilted cyanotypes to traditional portraiture, the artists delve into the emotional labor that is required to reclaim ownership of their physical being from a world that holds its own opinions on how they should express and understand their self in their body.
