“Earthly Bodies: The Houston Brick Archive is a conceptual project spearheaded by Houston based artist Alexander Squire that highlights a large collection of commercial bricks salvaged from various sites around the city of Houston. The bricks are studied with scrupulous attention paid to their organic and expressive form and materiality. An archeological enterprise, the bricks are then systematically processed as artifacts and showcased on multi-tiered repetitive grid-like shelves situated within expertly fabricated backlit display cabinets. Featured as unique specimens, the bricks forge a sense of familiarity and immediacy for the viewer cultivating an awareness of their rich history and complex network of migration, movement and interchangeability. The exhibition is further enhanced by compelling video, immersive soundscape and interactive brick rubbings.”
