December 14 - January 31, 2020
“This show celebrates the work of Fontenot while welcoming him back to San Antonio as the newest curatorial resident at Casa Chuck @ SALA DIAZ. Fontenot last exhibited in San Antonio in the Fall of 2017 as part of his residency at ARTPACE. From 2011-2016, he was Director and Chief Curator at CentralTrak, an International artists’ residency through the University of Texas in Dallas, Texas. Most recently, he was a Tulsa Artist Fellow. Fontenot has created an extensive body of work as a figurative draftsman. He describes his practice of rendering portraits as a meditation and an exercise in intimate connectivity. Approaching the subject with heightened sensitivity and a goal of progress, Fontenot indulges neither superficiality nor libido. His portraits of unclothed subjects reveal the nuances of idiosyncratic expression and the delicacies of our humanness. He identifies his studio practice of drawing and painting to be the nearest thing he has to a sustained spiritual practice. Fontenot is currently Grand Poo-Bah of The Lodge of Saint Reborlaro as part of his residency at CASA CHUCK. Borrowing themes and images from fraternal secret societies, rodeos, brothels, and places of worship, He will curate gatherings inspired by the urgency for artists and thinkers to intimately interact. From workshops and readings to guided meditations and fabricated ceremonial dramas, Fontenot will foster a schedule of accessible and inviting public programming with a rotating cast of collaborators. Expect him to “…call upon the divine spirit of Saint Reborlaro,” on the way to announcing further programming at C7 while the show is on view until January 31, 2020.”
