November 23 - December 28, 2019
A solo exhibition in Dallas featuring Charlotte Smith.
“Known for her process-driven practice of dripping and dropping layers upon layers of paint on canvas, Smith has continued to push the limits of her medium. This recent body of work marks an in-depth return to the artist’s interpretation of the “white” painting, an endeavor initially explored by modernist artists such as Kazimir Malevich and later by postmodernist artists such as Robert Ryman and Robert Rauschenberg. Though Smith’s prior paintings read “white” they often employed a variety of hues within. Shades of Pale focuses on the stripping away of contrasting color, allowing the composition to take the lead role. Inspired by the artist’s recent extended stays on the Gulf of Mexico, the rhythmic rush of ocean waves appears as a leitmotif within this series, both in the tonality of blue and green hues as well as in the fluidity of her marks, which are at once intentional and subject to the chance of each drop.”
