“This group is formed of Latin American Women Artist living in Houston, who, in the last two decades, have seen themselves expatriated from their homeland of Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela.
Their love and dedication to the Arts brought them to the Glassell School of Art to perfect their skills and meet the community. I had the pleasure to instruct many of them, and witness the impact of the School as a catalyst of personal growth and social insertion. It is in this fertile ground that the group was brought into being under my mentorship. The commonality that struck me between these women, besides the obvious share of language and customs, is their high degree of education acquired in their native countries, especially in the field of engineering, and architecture among others. The work presented in this exhibition is as varied as the women in the group, although two definitive trends emerge. The first is a strong interest in the human figure sometimes associated with a social engagement in the tradition of Diego Rivera, and Oswaldo Guayasamín.”
