February 22 - 25, 2019
One for Us is an exhibition featuring the work of a multitude of women of color from all parts of Texas. The works included in this exhibition examine the current landscape of artists attempting to better understand their own identities within the radically troubling social milieu of the 21st century. Whether it is finding power within that marginalization or examining the origins of their otherness, the artists are able to explore this idea of identity in nuanced and complex ways. The works featured in One for Us explore the tension between the self and those surrounding the self. It mines the space between the experiences of women of color and how they have come to develop their identity within and through those experiences in order to establish their artistic and lived personhood. Into these works, the artists incorporate their lived experiences as women of color in the South while simultaneously bringing into question ideas of identification as it relates to intersections of race, religion, nationality, and sexuality.
This exhibition is curated by Jaelynn Walls, BA candidate in Art History and Plan II Honors at The University of Texas at Austin.
