“On August 18, Jamal Cyrus returned from a 6 week trip around the Atlantic Ocean margin, which took him from South Africa to Haiti, with many stops in between. Courtesy of the BMW Art Journey, Cyrus was exploring the notion of the “Afro-Atlantic”. It is, in his own words, “an intercontinental and multinational geography describing the circulation of ideas between Africa, Europe, and the Americas.” Inspired in part by Paul Gilroy’s writings from the early 1990s, Cyrus examined the many diverse cultural hybrids that have emerged through protracted interaction between the continents.”
