“Lana Lin brings us two films inspired by women writers who struggled with disability and illness. Almost the Cocktail Hour is a 16mm experimental biography of Jane Bowles-an expatriate, lesbian, alcoholic, and wife of the writer/composer Paul Bowles. Lin will also present an excerpt of her newest film, The Cancer Journals Revisited, which re-envisions Black lesbian poet Audre Lorde’s 1980 memoir of her breast cancer experience with writers, artists, and cancer patients reciting the manifesto on camera. Immediately following the screening, there will be a panel discussion with Lin, Aurora Curator Mary Magsamen, artist Thedra Cullar Ledford, and Carol Herron, Arts In Medicine Coordinator at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers. Brazos Bookstore will have Lin’s book, Freud’s Jaw and Other Lost Objects, and other related books for sale.”
