Art Club was founded and curated by Kirby Liu, the Director of POST, the former Barbara Jordan Post Office that has been reimagined into a mall-like hub featuring a food hall, co-working spaces, a music venue, and a rooftop farm and park. The concept of the art space was inspired by the Day for Night music festival held at POST in 2017, prior to the renovation.

In a press release, Mr. Liu said, “With the exception of Houston, thriving downtowns of major cities are almost always anchored by a museum. Art Club is a fusion of art museum, performing arts venue, and entertainment facility. By melding these elements together, our goal is to establish a new museum and nightlife destination unlike anything the city has seen before.”

The two-story 28,500-square-foot venue is divided into 13 galleries, each presenting works by a new media artist. The space will be open Monday through Thursday from Noon to 8 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Details regarding the nightclub operating hours have not yet been announced, however, Art Club has explained, “In nightclub mode, DJs will activate the lounge and black box theater.”

Art Club’s inaugural exhibition includes works by local and international artists, including Shoplifter / Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir, media.tribe, Lachlan Turczan, Lumus Instruments, Daniel Anguilu with Taylor Knapps, Reynier Leyva Novo, Skyler Smith, Boris Acket, TUNDRA, Aka Chang, and Nerdy Artist Union. The length of the first exhibition has not been announced, however, details for the second round of artists will be shared in the coming year. Art Club will open on Saturday, December 7, 2024. Learn more about Art Club and purchase tickets via the venue’s website

A view of “A Separate Reality”

A Separate Reality by Daniel Anguilu X Taylor Knapps
A Separate Reality is a collaboration between Houston-based Anguilu’s iconic street art and Knapps’ light and sound installations, telling a story of time, identity and natural resilience. The work blends street painting with modern technology, light and sound. The vibrant works of Anguilu, which have become a staple of Houston’s arts and culture, reach a second degree of movement with AI generative coding, sound and light.

Taylor Knapps is an artist from Houston that uses light, sound and modern computer programming techniques to create deeply immersive experiences. He is the Artistic Technical Director of Art Club.

A rendering of “WET:LAND”

WET:LAND by Skyler Smith
WET:LAND is comprised of two steel basins on concrete pedestals arranged in an equal (=) sign. The basins, one of which is an artificial wetland supported by grow lights while the other is pure water, highlight the interdependency and equivalency between land and water.

Skyler Smith is a landscape designer, researcher and artist based in Houston.
