Earlier this year, Washington Gallery, a new contemporary art gallery opened in downtown Waco.
The gallery is owned and operated by Alan Scott, who moved to Waco with his family in 2022. Prior to opening the gallery, Mr. Scott ran Fine Art Management, a Southern California-based company offering art installation, framing, restoration and repair, lighting, and other art services. He told Waco’s Magazine that he had never considered opening a gallery in California because doing so would have put him in competition with friends working in the arts industry.
By opening Washington Gallery, Mr. Scott strives to create a space that is welcoming to all and serves as a creative hub. The inaugural exhibition Road Trip To Waco featured 14 artists. Since then, the gallery’s roster has grown to 20 artists from across Texas and the U.S., as well as local artists Greg Lewallen, Ellen Mote, Kattya Scott, Emily Stephens, and Stacey Warnix. As part of the space, Washington Gallery also maintains a dedicated Youth Gallery, where young people can have an opportunity to show their work. Artists featured in the Youth Gallery keep 100% of the proceeds from their sales.
Earlier this month, the gallery wrapped up its second exhibition Cool, Calm, and Collected. According to its website, its next show The Follow Up Album will debut on Tuesday, October 1. To date, the gallery has focused on group exhibitions, however, recently via its newsletter, it announced that in the coming year it will begin to host solo shows.
