The Thoma Foundation Art of the Spanish Americas Conservation Grant offers support for projects that preserve historical artworks and safeguard viceregal South American heritage. Projects at various stages of development are eligible for funding, however, must include a preservation/conservation professional. These grants range in duration from one to two years. The deadline to apply for the conservation grant is December 15, 2024. Recipients will be notified in February 2025 and the grant will begin on March 1, 2025. Learn more and apply for the conservation grant via the Thoma Foundation website.

The organization’s Exploratory Travel Award is open to PhD students and supports travel to Latin America to visit archives, museums, and art collections, while connecting with scholars. The goal of this initiative is to provide opportunities for students to develop research projects for future application to the organization’s Pre-Doctoral Fellowship. The award of $5,000 is meant to fund travel of one to two months. The deadline to apply for this grant is January 15, 2025. Awardees will receive funding within six weeks from the application deadline. Click here to learn more and apply for the Exploratory Travel Award.

Additionally, the Foundation supports scholars, curators, art historians, and graduate students working on an MA thesis or PhD dissertation through its Research & Travel Awards in Art of the Spanish Americas grants. Grants of up to $25,000 are available to assist with the costs of research-related expenses, such as travel and accommodation, photography/digital images, access and research fees, tuition remission, supportive staffing, and scientific analysis.

Congruently, the Marilynn Thoma Fellowship in Art of the Spanish Americas is seeking applicants. Through this program, the Foundation offers pre- and post-doctoral fellowships in support of research projects that advance the study of the art of the Spanish Americas. Proposed projects should showcase original scholarship and/or contribute significantly to the understanding of the art of the Spanish Americas. Fellowships range from one to two years and should result in a measurable outcome such as a museum exhibition, dissertation, book publication, scholarly essay, or lecture series. Pre-doctoral applicants can receive $50,000 for one year and post-doctoral applicants can receive $65,000 as either a one or two-year award.

Both the Research & Travel Awards in Art of the Spanish Americas and the Marilynn Thoma Fellowship in Art of the Spanish Americas application deadline is December 15, 2024. Learn more and apply for these opportunities via the Thoma Foundation website
