Easyside, a Fort Worth-based nonprofit, in partnership with the Artist Mama Fund, a granting program for artist single mothers, has launched an open call for the Texas Single Parent (TSP) Art Prize.
The prize came about when Easyside co-founder Corrie Thompson reached out to performance artist Christian Cruz about ways the nonprofit could support the Artist Mama Fund. Ms. Cruz established the fund in 2020 as a small unrestricted grant awarded to artists who are single mothers. TSP (pronounced “teaspoon”) is open to artists (regardless of gender) who are single parents living in Texas.
The competition is being juried by Jessica Fuentes, Glasstire’s News Editor, an artist and single parent. Ms. Fuentes holds an MA in Art Education from the University of North Texas and a BA in Art & Performance from the University of Texas at Dallas. She is a former member of the F6 Gallery Collective and 500X Gallery. In 2023, Ms. Fuentes and Ms. Cruz received a grant from the U.S. Latinx Art Forum’s Artist Mentorship Program. From 2021 to 2023, Fuentes served as the Founding Director of Kinfolk House, a collaborative art space established by Sedrick and Letitia Huckaby.
The selected artist will receive a solo exhibition in Easyside’s micro-gallery and a stipend of $200, though the amount may increase depending on fundraising efforts. The gallery is ten feet eight inches tall, eight feet nine inches wide, and nine feet five inches deep and features a five foot eight inch wide storefront window.
Artists are invited to submit their exhibition proposal along with one to five images of works of art to be considered for the opportunity. The submission deadline is Friday, September 13. A winner will be announced the following week and the exhibition will open on Saturday, October 5. Learn more about the space and apply via Easyside’s website.
