Houston Center for Contemporary Craft Announces Partial Reopening

by Jessica Fuentes August 13, 2024

Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC) has announced that it is reopening parts of its building following its closure due to damage it incurred from Hurricane Beryl last month.

When Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Southern Texas, it was downgraded from a Category 5 to a Category 1 storm, however, the storms and strong winds caused nearly 3 million residents and businesses to lose power. Some Houston-area art spaces took weeks to reopen.

The Houston Chronicle reported that HCCC had already been dealing with power outage issues due to earlier summer storms and because the building was without electricity following Beryl, the staff could not accurately assess the damage immediately. Ultimately, this led to the organization’s insurance company denying its claim because staff could not prove how water entered the building.

The partial reopening includes HCCC’s front gallery and resident artists’ studios. Visitors will be able to view the summer exhibition Disclosure: The Whiteness of Glass through Saturday, August 24. A statement released by HCCC noted, “Following the next two weeks, our rebuilding efforts will accelerate, as we set our sites on fully reopening for our fall exhibitions.”
