Frontera Arts in Bloom, a nonprofit organization that runs an artist-in-residence program in Brownsville, has launched an open call for Texas artists to participate in its fall residency program.

Established in August 2023 by local artist Jesus Treviño, Frontera Arts in Bloom manages the Flower Shop Residency, the first program of its kind in the city. Inspired by his experiences at residencies like the Desert Door Residency in Austin, Skowhegan in Maine, and Rockland Woods in Seattle, Mr. Treviño transformed a former flower shop into a space for artists last year. The building has three bedrooms and a multipurpose shared space. The once-a-year residency houses three artists: one from Brownsville, one from the Rio Grande Valley region, and another from elsewhere in Texas.

The five-week residency runs from October 7 through November 10, 2024. Selected artists will receive a $1,000 stipend as well as access to studio space, a workshop and tools, and a private bedroom. Artists are expected to use the studio space for at least 20 hours a week, document their experience on social media, facilitate a community outreach event, and participate in scheduled visits to art institutions and historical sites in Brownsville and studio visits and critiques at local art organizations. Additionally, artists will be part of a group pop-up exhibition and have virtual studio visits with Flower Bud residents in April 2025.

The deadline to apply is Wednesday, August 14, 2024, and selected artists will be announced by August 23, 2024. Learn more and apply via this Google Form. Questions regarding the application or the program can be emailed to [email protected]
