Recommended Viewing: The Big Bend Sentinel’s Drawing of the Week

by Brandon Zech March 4, 2021

We at Glasstire are big fans of local papers, especially those with a Texas focus. One of the best tends to be the Big Bend Sentinel, a weekly newspaper that covers Presidio County and Far West Texas. It’s been in operation since 1926 and recently, under new owners,  opened a headquarters-cum-coffee shop/boutique in Marfa.

In both the print and online editions of the paper, the Sentinel publishes their Drawing of the Week, which is sourced from local schoolchildren. And for the past few months, since masking is the norm, the column has delightfully shown multiple “self portraits with masks” by the students in Heidi Roman’s second grade class.

These wonderful sketches are drawn with abandon. They’re free, telling, and odd — all in the best possible way. You can see a few of them below; all images come from the Thursday digital edition of the Big Bend Sentinel’s paper. To sign up to get these drawings, and the Sentinel’s reporting, in your inbox, go here.
