As Peter Schjeldahl predicted in the New Yorker, “the Frank Stella retrospective at the Whitney Museum will likely provoke varied opinions, on a scale from great to god-awful.” But reviews have been mostly positive. Hyperallergic called the show, “a brilliantly curated, blatantly overhung masterstroke of an exhibition that turns the artist’s weaknesses into strengths and his strengths into powerhouses.”
Curated by Michael Auping, Chief Curator, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, with the involvement of Whitney Director Adam Weinberg, the exhibition will travel to the Modern in April 2016. For Texans who can’t wait to get a dose of living art history, Stella will be in Waco tomorrow evening for the Biennial Artist Conversation at the Allbritton Art Institute at Baylor. Art critic Jason Kaufman will interview the 79-year old artist, beginning at 6:30pm. (It’s free, with a buffet reception to follow, but seating is limited.)
All art students and art lovers should really try to sit in on this one. Even Schjeldahl admits, “Stella made a permanent difference in art history.”

To this day I still have fond memories of the Frank Stella mural project at UH’s Moore School of Music. Nice guy. Loves his cigars and baseball.
