Thank God for Christie Blizard‘s brand of feminism. I’ll take that any day over dour feminist rantings, like those of the feminist bookstore in Portlandia, Women and Women First. On Saturday evening, September 13, Blizard got down and dirty to “fight” Willem de Kooning’s objectification of women at Epitome Institute in San Antonio. Artist Cathy Carol Cunningham, in white overalls, glasses and a silver wig, played de Kooning.
De Kooning’s corner man was the Grim Reaper and Blizard’s was Frosty the Snowman. Fog machines, lights, music, a timing bell, and referees added atmosphere. Blizard and deKooning wrestled in a huge plastic swimming pool filled with wet dark mud, which got all over the walls and anyone too near the splash zone. Blizard flung mud all over faux de Kooning paintings. The way Blizard splashed mud at de Kooning reminded me of a little kid splashing as much water possible in a swimming pool. The fight was a successfully hilarious symbolic event and there was a full room to cheer her on.

Thank you Glasstire! My opponent was artist Carol Cunningham.
