The Dallas Art Fair: It’s back and it’s better

by Kelly Klaasmeyer April 15, 2012

The Dallas Art Fair is back and seemed way better than last year. Here are some highlights:

Conduit Gallery

Dallas’ Conduit brought an interesting range of work.

Conduit brought in Gabriel Dawe and his stairwell installation "Plexus C3," Gutterman thread, wood, hooks, 20'x4'x12', 2012

Sandra Ono's weird rubber band and glue "driftwood" at Conduit Gallery. It's kind of icky and riveting at the same time.

More Sandra Ono at Conduit, this time it's a slab of paper towels and glue.

Ludwig Schwarz at Conduit.

Charlie James Gallery

I always love the stuff at this LA gallery.

William Powhida's "How to Destroy LA" at Charles James Gallery

Alex Schaefer's painting of an imagined Chase Bank conflagration

 Moody Gallery

Houston’s Moody brought a nice piece from Manual’s series of book photographs.

MANUAL (Hill / Bloom) "Around the U.S.A. in 1,000 Pictures," 2012 archival pigment print, ed: 5 59 3/4" x 43 1/2" Work 2 of 21 at Moody Gallery

 CB1 Gallery

Los Angeles’ CB1 Gallery brought some subtly wonderful paintings by Mira Schor. I don’t know how the gouache, oil and gesso are used together in Trace but the surface is great. Also check out Schor’s blog, A Year of Positive Thinking.

Mira Schor, "Trace" 2001, gouache, oil, gesso, on linen, 12" x 16"

Mira Schor, "The Professor," oil on linen, 16" x 12"

Webb Gallery

Eclectic is the operative word at this Waxahachie treasure.

Hector Alonzo Benavides, Untitled, ink on illustration board, 20" x 30", ca. 1997, at Webb Gallery

Marty Walker Gallery

Dallas’s Marty Walker has a whole wall of Wayne White classics.

Lots o' Wayne White.

Bret Slater, "The Adventures of Rusty Jalopy," acrylic on canvas, 39" x 41" x 3", 2012

Detail, edge of Slater's wonderfully gloppy surface.

Lisa Cooley

New York’s Lisa Cooley participated this year.

Former Houstonians Lisa Cooley and Scot Calhoun return to the Lone Star State.

Alan Reid, "Carriage Fades," 2012, caran d'ache, tinted gesso, and acrylic on canvas, 60 x 48 inches

Kirk Hopper Fine Art

Dallas’s Kirk Hopper brought in Sharon Engelstein’s large floor installation, filled with vividly hued cuddling/copulating amoeboid forms.

Detail of Sharon Engelstein's large furry floor piece, "Hosers," 2012

(There was more good stuff but my laptop and its photos had an unfortunate encounter with tomato juice and is now at the Apple hospital until further notice…)

Pulled this from the web for Horton Gallery—retina searing painting by Palma Blank. It doesn’t convey in photos but bowls you over in person.
