The news from within the Chronicle is that (surprise!) they won't be adding any staff jobs after the cuts from last week…which means that, while they're keeping a classical music and a theater critic on staff, there's nobody assigned to the visual art beat with the departure of 26-year veteran Patty Johnson. Given the relative sizes of the classical music/theater scenes in Houston vs. the visual art scene, well, it just makes absolutely no sense. Johnson, who was criticized for sticking to more conservative work (though how much of that was her bias and how much her editors' is hard to know), will nonetheless be missed.
