George Wentz: Joie de Vivre

The Art Museum of Southeast Texas presents an exhibition of work by George Wentz from July 24 through September 26. In March 2010, the Southeast Texas community lost a beloved friend with the death of this artist, George Wentz. The opening reception takes place on Friday, July 23 to remember Wentz and will include a gallery talk about the artist’s life and work by Andy Coughlan. Forty paintings, drawings, and collages from the 1960s to 2010 are on view in this exhibition titled, Joie de Vivre, derived from a French expression meaning “joy of life or living.” Wentz's gestural and abstract works are reminiscent of the French post-impressionists and the most recent collection of paintings and drawings was donated to the museum.

Women Artists: Selections from the AMSET Permanent Collection continues the summer series of exhibitions from the permanent collection of the museum. This selection of work created by women artists represented in AMSET’s collection includes photography, painting, sculpture, mixed media, textiles, and printmaking. The exhibition consists of forty works created by contemporary women artists either born in Texas or who have spent a majority of their career working in the state. Artists include Mary McCleary, Bessie Harvey, Sarah Mary Taylor, Patricia Cargill, Maudee Carron, Cherry Sha Ela Re El, and Janna Fulbright.

The Art Museum of Southeast Texas presents HIS Glory, a series of twelve mixed media works by Beaumont artist and art educator Jackie Stubblefield, on view in Café Arts through November 1. Stubblefield loosely titled these works “art quilts” due to the use of fabric and other materials which were conceived of as narrative works that comment on Old and New Testament Christian teachings.
