From Elgin Street Studios:
“Curated by Erika Mei Chua Holum
wild things play (also titled play wild things or things play wild) explores wildness within artistic approaches during the 2023 Elgin Street Summer Intensive at the University of Houston. Drawing from Jack Halberstam “Theories of The Wild,” artists locate wildness within the unbounded and unpredictable spaces often located in opposition to modernity’s orderly impulses. Through methods drawn from Halberstam’s radical queer practice and politics, play wild things illuminates and expands the normative taxonomies and neat classifications in favor of fun, unruly, and disruptive actions that offer new possibilities for daydreaming, play, and revelry.
Co-founded by Liz Gates and Doug Welsh, the Elgin Street Summer Intensive is in its third year. Our program supports graduate artists from the University of Houston, providing time for them to create work, build community, explore the Houston arts scene and present their work in a group exhibition.
Featuring works by Isela Aguirre, Saran Alderson, Hannah Bender, Maddie Casagranda, Crystal Coutler, Maddy Foutz, Salma Hamouda, Blya Krouba, Lau De León, Jen Marion, Jo Phenneger, Mandana Ranjbar, Sajeela Siddiq, and Adrienne Simmons
