Faking It: Manipulated Photography before Photoshop is the first major exhibition devoted to the history of manipulated photographs before the digital age. Some 180 works demonstrate that today’s digitally altered photographs are part of a tradition that extends to the beginning of photography. This exhibition is organized by the The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and debuted there in October 2012, before traveling to the National Gallery of Art, Washington.

I saw this show at the Met in NY and left with a renewed faith in human nature. Apparently within seconds of being handed the first device that accurately recorded the simple, unadorned reality of what was right there in plain view, amateurs and professionals both began to mess around with it. Score one for us.
